Thomas "Tom" Bradley was born on December 29, 1917, in Calvert, Texas. Growing up in a racially segregated America, Bradley faced numerous challenges and obstacles. A Passion for Public Service

After serving as a military police officer during World War II, Bradley returned to Los Angeles, where he embarked on a distinguished legal career. While practicing law, he became increasingly involved in civil rights activism, fighting for racial equality and justice.

Rise to Mayoralty

In 1963, Bradley made his first ambitious attempt at the mayoral position in Los Angeles but narrowly lost. Undeterred, he persisted and five years later, in 1969, Bradley made history by becoming the first African American to be elected to the Los Angeles City Council.
